    The purpose of the course is to help English major freshpersons to understand the characteristics of the English Studies degree programme. Special attention will be paid to study skills in relation to the difference between secondary school and university studies. The course also aims at providing a structured introduction to the field of English studies as a scholarly discipline of the humanities. Some topics treated: What is a university? What isthe English major? The infrastructure of the English major. Study skills: reading, writing, speaking. Books, dictioonaries. Computers. Specialization at the department. Career prospects. English studies in the world. English studies as a discipline. The last unit of the course deals with the key concepts of modern cultural and literary theory, which will be indispensable during further studies: language, civilisation, culture; culture, taste, fashion, style; registers of culture; canons and canon formation.     Based on technical and theoretical issues discussed in the Introduction to the Study of Literature I. survey course of the first semester, this course aims at introducing students into the most important considerations of literary interpretation and theory, and in doing so it hopes to help students arrive at a more complex understanding of literary works of art and other products of social signifying practices. Our primary objective is to study the skills and theoretical terms we need in order to approach and interpret texts.
    We will be applying different theoretical and interpretive strategies to representative texts of the three major genres, thus enlarging and problematizing the fields we covered in the first semester. We will discuss problems of textuality, literary communication, interaction between text and interpreter, historicity and contextuality, interdisciplinarity.
    Topics: 1. The ontology and dynamics of the literary work of art. The communication model. 2. Formal vs. contextual approaches. Authorial intention & meaning creation, work & text. 3. Horizons of expectations. The act and temporality of reading. 4. Poststructuralism and semiotics. Surveys will focus on the major periods of English literary history, with an interdisciplinary methodology. The primary objective is to provide a historical background and foundation for the employment of interpretive skills.

    The course aims to instruct students in the development and practice of writing skills necessary for a successful completion of their academic papers and theses. Students will be provided with samples of academic writing following the topics of the course. The lecture component of each class session will target the various aspects and elements of the writing process as well as the structural organization of various parts of papers. In the discussion component of each class students will analyze and critique each other’s work, while in the end of the class all students wil report on and summarize the main points of their short texts, with the main assignment of the course being the rewriting of a term paper according to the aspects of writing discussed in the course.

    The BA set of exams includes three comprehensive exams that will assess students’ readiness to move on to the third stage of their studies. The Academic English 2 comprehensive exam tests grammar and language skills. The Major Paper is an academic paper which requires research and interpretive skills. The formal requirements of the paper are specified in the MP regulations of the Institute of English and American Studies. LCCT, the Literature and Culture Comprehensive Test measures students’ general background knowledge in the various fields of the academic study of Anglo-Saxon cultures, on the basis of a set list of readings.

    This advanced level course seeks to focus on theories of literature and culture which were instrumental in constructing the emerging paradigm of ”literary studies” in English-language cultures (New Criticism, myth and archetypal criticism) and on those (postmodernism, poststructuralism, feminism, postcolonialism, multiculturalism) which facilitated the shift in the dominant paradigm, giving rise to ”cultural studies”

    The writing of an MA thesis is the condition for the successful completion of the English program. The paper is an academic work which is grounded in a well defined research question and is based on a period of research and consultations with the MAT supervisor.
