    The course offers an introduction to the discipline, discussing the various definitions, approaches, and methods of American studies. In the course, you will be presented some of the current and older (“traditional”) major fields, methodologies, themes, and topics of the discipline with a view on the wide array of other disciplines (anthropology, cultural studies, literary studies, history, sociology, etc.) that American studies have relied on, borrowed from, or appropriated. I also hope to familiarize you with options, available to you in the American Studies program in the next 4-5 years, to organize your own study program. Grading: Reading journal (of set readings), 10% of the total grade; two short quizzes (20%); a final examination, consisting of a test (basic definitions, 30%) and an essay, 40%. Passing grade requirement: completion of all three assignments, 51% of total points.

    The study of literature involves the student in a complex activity of reading and interpretation. This process combines methods of understanding how meaning is produced on different levels of society; how meaning-making activities reflect the dominant discourses of our social and historical position; how the status of the literary work of art becomes problematic when investigated in an interactive model between text and interpreter. This introductory course aims at providing students with a set of tools to examine the above problems as represented in various literary works, together with a survey of the technical skills indispensable to the experience of reading. Special emphasis will be laid on students' understanding of terminology. Grading: final examination in writing.

    The Internet has become a vast and popular medium of communication. As the number of electronic publications is growing by the minute, the Internet is not so much a storehouse of information, but rather a space for the production and reception of electronic texts. So one may well say that today the concept of literacy involves a basic Internet (electronic) literacy. The course "Surfing with a Purpose" aims at providing a specific introduction to the Internet as a site of communication in the above sense. The course is designed to introduce American Studies students to using the Internet for academic purposes. Firstly, you need to know how to find specific information or documentation on an issue or topic on the net. Secondly, you should be familiar with certain sites where a handful of topics are well linked. Thirdly, you should be able to produce e-texts and add a page to the Web if you wish. The course shows materials and methods at the same time, and requires your involvement to process the results of an Internet Search into personal knowledge.

    Based on technical and theoretical issues discussed in the Introduction to the Study of Literature survey course and the Introduction II seminar of the first year, this field of studies aims at introducing students into the most important considerations of chronology, literary history, philology and related considerations of interpretation. In doing so it hopes to help students arrive at a more complex understanding of literary works of art and other products of social signifying practices, contextualized in their historical and socio-economic contexts. Surveys will focus on the major periods of English literary history, with an interdisciplinary methodology. The primary objective is to provide a historical background and foundation for the employment of interpretive skills.

    The course aims to instruct students in the development and practice of writing skills necessary for a successful completion of their academic papers and theses. Although the course is compulsory and at first sight seems to be a routine of mechanized tasks, it proved vital for writing both your major paper and your thesis. Students will be provided with samples of academic writing following the topics of the course, illustrated mostly through texts in literature and culture. The lecture component of each class section will target the various aspects and elements of the writing process as well as the structural organization of various parts of papers. In the discussion component of each class students will analyze and critique each other's work, while at the end of the class all students will report on and summarize the main points of their discussions. Throughout the term, students will be required to write and rewrite various short texts, with the main assignment of the course being the rewriting of a term paper according to the aspects of writing discussed in the course.

    The course has multiple aims. It intends to give a survey of the making of American Studies as an institutionalized academic discipline, which making has had its formulations and articulations of its most central tenets within the rapidly and radically changing framework of cultural theories and cultural studies. (In fact, it would not be a daring exaggeration to say that the reformulations of theories of culture have been inseparable from attempts to rethink the conceptual and methodological world of American Studies.) In the lectures, I will also discuss the relationship of “theory” and practice, questioning their neat dualism and arguing for theory as a “form” (disguise) of practice. Finally, through the presentation of various models of (doing) American Studies as cultural studies, I hope to introduce still functional and viable procedures and tools of the trade.
    Assignments: It is requested that you familiarize yourself with the set (and optionally, the recommended) texts, several of which you will have read by now (or will have to read). The texts will be available in electronic format and either a reading packet or “in the original”–depending on your choice.

    Objective and procedure: The course discusses the major intellectual traditions of the US from the early 17th century until the era of the Reconstruction. We will have manifold perspective on the issues central to the changing traditions; first, original documents will be read and discussed and then the (re)interpretations and (r)evaluations by later generations will be presented for discussion. Though concentrating on the three main “currents” (Puritanism, Enlightenment, and Transcendentalism) of mainstream intel­lectual traditions of the dominant Anglo-American/WASP culture, we will also read documents undermining their exceptional/exclusive position. And throughout the course a central concern will be the examination of how mainstream traditions are created, maintained at the expense of “other” traditions. An essential component in the discussions will be interpretations of phenomena of material culture in an interdisciplinary manner. Major topics: 1. Methods in intellectual history; Intellectual history and cultural history 2. Puritans in America 3. Enlightenment in America 4. Transcendentalism Grading: two short quizzes (20% of the overall grade); final examination, in class, a test (textual identification, 40%) and an essay, 5-6 pages (40%).
